The Impact of European Discovery of the New World

What was the impact of European discovery of the New World?

Readings in the McKay text from chapter 16, “The Acceleration of Global Contact.” You will need to read and understand the following two sections of chapter 16: “The European Voyages of Discovery,” and the “Impact of Conquest.”

There may be surprise reading quizzes whenever an assignment is due–bottom-line, I want you to read in this class.

Christopher Columbus: Explorer or Exploiter?

Construct a comments after watching this video.

Where do you stand on Columbus? Explorer? Exploiter? Both?

YOUR COMMENT MUST BE 250 WORDS OR MORE. Your comment must have a “thesis” (or a clear train of thought re: the Columbus controversy); it must contain specific evidence from the sources we’ve looked at in this class:  the “History versus Christopher Columbus” video, the McKay text, the article on sugar, the video on the Columbian Exchange, the website “Native American Genocide,” and the PBS video, “Cracking the Mayan Code.”The writing must be clear and grammatically correct.

As mentioned earlier–remember the post re: the Mongols?–take your time, write your response in Microsoft Word or in Google Docs, etc. This way you can spell-check and proof read it.

***Before any posting, you will be sharing your document with me–it will count as two quiz grades. Once you’ve fine-tuned your responses–and I have approved your written response–you will be posting it on this website.

In class, we will respond to other comments –at least 3–on the site (this will count as participation). Please focus your comments on substance, not something like “Hi Steve. I like the quote you used in your comment about Columbus.”
